Burglary – The Personal Cost

It’s easy to look at burglary – and the wider subject of security – as a serious of statistics. And statistics can make for a very compelling story.

But sometimes it’s worth stopping to look not at the national numbers – the financial costs, the hours of police time taken, the impact on businesses – but at the actual victims.  People whose lives are turned upside down when the unthinkable happens.

That’s what this story made us do when it appeared.

Sheree Taylor, from Tingley, Leeds, was asleep at home when her house was burgled during the Christmas holidays.  Her two children were also asleep in their rooms.  A thief broke in through a patio door, and stole a TV, clothes, jewellery and even Christmas gifts, before taking a set of keys and stealing the family car.

What’s hurt the family most, though, is not the loss of their possessions.

“The person who did it took a lot more than our possessions,” Ms Taylor said. “They stole our sense of security. I feel like we just can’t get our life back on track.”

Of her 14 year old son Andrew, she said: “He’s not sleeping, we’re having to sleep with the lights on – it’s like he’s listening out for something the whole time. He won’t be in the house by himself.”

Ms Taylor confirms that security at their home has been upgraded since the break-in, but of course it’s a step too late for this family.

At Blackburn Alarms, even we sometimes fall into the trap of looking at the ‘big picture’: the systems, the  technology. What’s so much more important is the detail that most of us – thankfully – will never experience.

Whatever you need to protect, don’t wait until it’s too late.
