Size doesn’t matter

Size doesn’t matter

This recent story from Northern Ireland proves that size really isn’t an issue when it comes to protecting your assets.

Of course we’re all aware of how easily small items can be stolen.  Whether it’s a mobile phone from a purse or pocket, or even a laptop or computer during an office break-in, carry-away items are easy pickings for criminals.

But that doesn’t mean you should take your larger possessions for granted.

When mindless vandals in Newtownabbey decided they wanted to demolish the local playing fields, they headed straight for a nearby construction site.  Easily defeating the flimsy perimeter fencing, they managed to drive away in a JCB-style digger, which they then used to tear up the playing fields and running tracks, and knock down goal posts.

The coverage, quite rightly, focuses on the cost to the local community – but we read the story from a different angle.  Whilst the vandals weren’t able to break into the construction site office, the fact that they were able to so easily steal such a massive piece of machinery raises serious questions about the level of security employed.

It’s quite possible that the owners of the equipment never even considered that it would be the target of thieves – quite clearly they put more effort into protecting their office, which doubtless contained valuable and sensitive information – the kind of things one might think thieves would be after.

Ask yourself – what do you own (or have responsibility for) that might be stolen even though you wouldn’t think of it as “theft-worthy”? Vehicles? Machinery?  Even if you think it would never be taken, do you have measures in place to be absolutely certain?

With over 30 years in the security field, we’ve been asked to provide alarm systems and other security measures to protect everything from commonplace items to the weird and the wonderful.  Whatever you need to protect, we can offer you sound advice.
