In America, At Least The Homes Are Getting Smarter!

A new wave of hi-tech domestic security systems coming from the USA let you monitor your home using your smartphone, tablet or computer. Your home can even ‘talk’ to you – alerting you to break-ins, fire, and a host of other happenings.

These systems use cellular connections, so they’re more reliable than older ones that relied on traditional phone line connections.

Over 15% of U.S. homes have a home security system that will alert a monitoring firm in case of incidents, according to market researcher Parks Associates. And it’s a fast-growing industry, with spending on home security predicted to double in the next 10 years!

Until recently, only high-end security systems costing upward of $20,000 (£12,000) were truly “smart,” handling security, video monitoring, motion detection, remote access and security-enhancing home automation features such as programmed lighting in one programme.

Now, these features are becoming available to mainstream customers.  Competition and advances in technology are driving down prices.

The typical do-it-yourself installation of a smart home security system can include:

• Security. Typically a security control panel that will, during an emergency, contact a monitoring company, Systems can incorporate phone lines as a backup and broadband connectivity for video streaming.

Extra features might include wireless door and window sensors, as well as sensors connected to specific rooms, or even cupboards, cabinets, desks and safes.

• Security add-ons such as motion-triggered video cameras can be used to monitor activity inside and outside the house. These allow you to view real-time video or photos on a smartphone, tablet or computer.

• Home automation. With a “smart” home, it’s possible to control various elements both inside and outside – triggering lights to come on as you approach the house, or doors to automatically lock as you leave.

As the technology continues to evolve, there is virtually no end to the possibilities for these all-singing-all-dancing home automation security systems.  Perhaps it’s not too far fetched to imagine that more and more of what we see in sci-fi moves will start to become reality!

TIPS

If you’re interested in setting up your home with the latest wizardry, there are a few things you’ll need to consider:

1. The installation. Do you want to install it yourself or have it professionally installed? DIY kits are available, but of course they’re only as effective as the work carried out to install them. Trusting the installation to a professional means that you’ll know the job’s been done properly – and you’ll get great advice that should leave you better protected.

2. The connection. Mobile connection is great, when it’s working! But if the network goes down you may want to consider having a good old fashioned landline as a back up.

3. Remote access. If you travel a lot, or you’re concerned about security during the day while you’re at work, you might want to consider a system that lets you ‘tap in’ from your phone, tablet or computer.

4. Home automation. The sky is the limit with this! Everything from lights and heating to curtains and home entertainment can be remotely controlled from the palm of your hand.
