Six West Suffolk Burglaries in a Single Day

Residents of West Suffollk are urged to be on the lookout for potential thieves and to be extra careful when locking their homes and businesses, after six different properties were hit in a single day last week.

Five of the robberies took place in broad daylight and most of them occurred outside of big townships, dispelling the myth that remote countryside houses are more secure from the threat of theft.

West Suffolk residents hit for six

The first robbery took place in Kings Close in Mildenhall, after an intruder entered a home through an unlocked back door between 1pm and 2.30pm. They made off with an unspecified amount of cash and some jewellery.

Two burglaries followed in Rede, not far from Bury St Edmunds. For the first, the homeowner returned in time to disturb the intruder before they could skedaddle with anything of significant value. Although the suspect had amassed a small pile of silverware and jewellery, they became spooked when the resident came back, escaping in a dark hatchback. This happened at 2.40pm. The second Rede burglar forced open a window of a house in the same neighbourhood, though it’s not clear whether anything was taken from the property as yet.

Two more forced entries of unsecured windows also were reported in Bury Road (Barrow) and Birds End (Hargrave), respectively. In both cases, a computer was taken, as well as a safe in the second instance.

The final robbery occurred at 9.35pm the same evening, when police were called to the scene of a house in The Green (West Row) where a security alarm had been tripped. This time, the baddies had absconded with a silver Land Rover Discovery, registration CV58 KNG.

Caution recommended

Police are appealing for any information pertaining to the burglaries, with particular regard to a dark blue Audi containing three white male suspects. Additionally, they have also asked for residents to be extra vigilant when looking after the security of their own property. Some basic measures being advised include:

• Keeping doors locked with the keys removed, even if you are still in the property
• Ensuring all windows (both upstairs and downstairs) have proper locks attached and in use at all times
• Securing gates to gardens with security-grade padlocks
• Making sure the exterior of your house is well-lit during nightfall, thus deterring potential housebreakers
• Investing in a timer switch to turn on and off lights while you’re away from home, making it look lived in at all times
• Keeping all shrubbery and hedges trimmed to a manageable size to allow you a clear view across your property
• Hiding away all valuables out of sight at all times
• Resisting the temptation to hide a spare set of keys outside, as practiced housebreakers will know all the usual hiding places
• Not leaving ladders, hammers, shovels or any other tools which could be used to force entry into your home lying around
