Victim Meets Burglar

At Blackburn Alarms it’s our mission to keep you protected from crime and accidents. We wish that every home and every business was properly protected.

Sadly that’s not always the case, and sometimes we all need a reminder of just how deeply becoming a victim can affect us.

Sussex Police’s Restorative Justice Partnership works to bring criminals and victims together, with the intention of reforming the former by meeting the latter.

One such meeting took place recently between a burglar and the woman whose home he invaded, four years after the event.

The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said:

“Four years after the burglary, this will help me to finally put the horrible events behind me.

“I feel that the offender is remorseful for his actions. Also, I feel I’ve had a part in the offender’s rehabilitation. I hope that he thinks twice before burgling another innocent person’s home.”

The burglar himself had this to say about the encounter:

“I volunteered to take part in the conference, but I felt anxious about meeting someone whose home I’d broken into. But I wanted to go through with it in order to start making changes to my life.

“I felt tearful during the conference as I heard for the first time how upset she’d been after the break-in.

“I hope she has accepted my apology. I feel like I can be proud for doing ‘something right’.”

The fact that schemes like this are being introduced is, we think, a positive. However, it’s still the case that most people could do far more to stop themselves falling prey to burglars, both at home and at work.

Installing a properly specified burglar alarm could be what stands between you and a meeting like the one above.
