Two Fires Signal End to Staffordshire Business

A fresh reminder this week of just how vital both perimeter security and fire detection are comes with the news that a Staffordshire firm, Oakham Environmental Waste and Recycling, are being forced to close their doors after two arson attacks left them unable to operate.

At least that was the decision of the Environment Agency, who determined that the firm had been forced to breach a number of regulations in order to continue trading in the wake of the attacks.

Bosses at the firm have vowed to appeal against the ruling,  but their previous appeal was unsuccessful, so the outlook doesn’t look promising for them.

Environment Agency Spokesman Jonathan Hall said: “We will not tolerate operators who continually breach the conditions of their permits, or pose unacceptable risks to the environment.”

Firm Manager Randle Hawkins said in reply: “We are launching an appeal – we feel we have been unfairly treated by the Environment Agency.

“We suffered two big arson attacks, we lost a lot of machinery and had a lot of burnt rubbish left in the yard.

“It is slowly being cleared, but not at the rate the agency want us to do it.”

Whichever side of the argument is true, we can’t help but think that if the site had had better perimeter security in place, then the arson attacks may never have happened.  Sadly, when attempting to protect large areas, it’s all too easy to install inadequate systems that either don’t catch all the angles, or that simply aren’t robust enough for the job.

We don’t know what systems were in place – but clearly they weren’t up to the job they were needed for.

Remember, whether you’re guarding anything from a large scale building site or commercial centre, to a single shop, office or even your home, the right CCTV and security systems can make all the difference.

Blackburn Alarms can help you specify and install the perfect CCTV system to meet your security needs.  Call us on 01254 739 255 or contact us here for an obligation-free chat.
