The Cost of Fire is Paid in More Than Just Cash

When fire fighters were called out to a former pub building in Bishopbriggs in the middle of the night on Thursday, they found an ‘intense fire’ already well established.  It was judged too dangerous to send in men to fight the blaze at close quarters – the building could not be saved.

The building was unoccupied and unused … nobody was hurt.

But that’s only half of the story.

Just because nobody was injured and no business was shut down does not mean the consequences of the blaze won’t be far reaching and severe.

For the building’s owners there will certainly be an investigation.  Were the proper safety measures in place? Could the blaze have been avoided?  Was there criminal neglect – or even worse, intent?

Such an investigation (even if the blaze was as we must assume purely accidental) will be massive distraction, drawing time and energy away from the very vital business of running a business.

And of course there’s the niggling worries.  What if someone had been sleeping in the building that night?  What if children had been playing there? What if the fire had spread to adjacent properties?  The building’s owners will be losing sleep, believe me.

All too often we count the cost of fires in cold hard cash.  But there’s so much more to lose.

The only way to gain true peace of mind (and to reduce the risk of any fire to its absolute minimum) is to ensure that every precaution has been taken … to enlist professional help to be absolutely sure that every risk is identified and that measures are taken to mitigate it.
