Store closes for 4-6 weeks following arson attack

We’ve spoken before about the potentially catastrophic costs when fire strikes a business.

Well recently we saw this story about an arson attack on a branch of low-cost chain Wilko, in Nuneaton.

The store was attacked, it is believed, by a 15 year old girl, who started a fire in the ‘goods in’ loading bay. By the time the emergency services arrived on scene the fire had taken hold and it took firefighters more than 4 hours to bring the blaze under control.  In that time significant damage was done to both premises and stock. But it’s not the immediate cost of repairing the damage and replacing the stock that is likely to have the biggest impact on the business.

With estimates of 4-6 weeks of closure in order to bring the store back into operation, the wider reaching costs will quickly mount up.

Of course there’s the loss of trade. Shoppers are being directed to the nearest sister store in the chain, 4 miles away … but in reality we wonder how many will actually make that journey rather than simply turning to a rival brand.

And once those customers get comfortable elsewhere, it’s going to take real effort to win them back – once gone they could be gone for good.
