Smile! Your on Candid Camera!

Just in case you are young enough not to remember Candid Camera, lucky you, Candid Camera was an American TV programme which basically relied on a hidden camera filming a practical joke. Perhaps pioneering the way for reality TV!  Of course hidden cameras, or perhaps CCTV as we now call it, are mainly used for surveillance, stopping and catching criminals. This is admittedly a very useful and serious business but sometimes these cameras go all ‘You’ve Been Framed” and the results can be rather funny, heroic, quirky or just entertaining.

Coca Cola recognised the beauty of CCTV back in 2012. In attempt to get away from the negative vibes that the “Big Brother is watching you” adage was pushing, it showed positive images of real people that had no idea anyone was watching. The 91 second advert struck a chord with people around the world as they watched a man reuniting a woman with her purse, hysterical office pranks and a guy who really danced like nobody was watching.

Caught in the act!

Back up to date and CCTV is still catching people in the act, literally. A pub land lady, based in the North West, who was  fed up of catching people with their trousers down on her family pub car park, threatened to post CCTV footage of the offenders online. And down south a real life Lou and Andy were seen stalking the supermarket aisles. Suddenly Andy has some kind of miracle healing and helps himself to £60.00 of products before being wheeled back onto the street by his accomplice. Whilst this is blatant stealing, there are others who just have the need to stock up on necessities which are already free, such as the recording of a woman stocking up on paper towels from her local petrol station. Every little helps we suppose.

The beauty of these CCTV incidents is that the stars are blissfully unaware of the camera. And it’s not just mere mortals that have not  quite realised the powers of technology, aliens and ghosts are also seemingly oblivious. From UFO’s to ET, CCTV is watching you. Back on earth, clothes adjustments and itches in awkward places have affected us all. You scurry into a corner to carry out a clothes adjustment, but is there really no one watching?

Of course the big brother haters are always going to hate and we kind of get it. The thought that the average Briton is caught on camera approximately 70 times a day is rather irksome. Yet for law abiding citizens who value safety, is it really such a terrific price to pay? Probably not and undoubtedly it will continue to provide us with entertaining footage. A win win situation!
