You see, Mark has just been released from prison after serving two and a half years for burglary. A habitual criminal since the age of 13 (at which age he already needed to turn to crime to fund his drug habit) the 31-year-old is now working alongside local police to help people understand just how at-risk their homes, offices and property are.

The key part of Mark’s message, based on nearly 20 years of crime, is that traditional deterrents such as burglar alarms and security lights do work. The Northants Telegraph reported that:

“Alarm boxes, even fakes, were a deterrent to him, as he did not have time to check if they were real. Security lights also put him off targeting a property.”

It’s great to see that someone who once, by his own admission, would burgle houses ‘without remorse’ is now using his experience to help fight crime rather than commit it.  It’s also excellent to see a police force taking a novel approach to crime prevention.

For us, Mark’s words reinforce the advice that we have been giving for over 30 years.
