Now You Can Stay One Step Ahead of Big Brother

Did you ever get that eerie feeling you were being watched? Well now you can know for sure.

In an ingenious blend of ancient body armour and the latest hi-tech gadgetry, an artist in London has created a unique shoulder-mounted device that recognises when the wearer is in sight of a CCTV camera, and alerts them by sending a (painless) electrical signal.

To be honest, we’re not exactly sure how many law-abiding citizens would benefit from such a device; but we have to admit we’re more than a little intrigued by the idea!

The device is the brainchild of artist James Bridle. Worn on the shoulder in the same way as a medieval ‘spaulder’ (part of a knight’s armour designed to protect the wearer from a blow from above) it contains a small sensor which picks up the infra-red light emitted by CCTV cameras.  When it detects that a camera is in range and directed towards the wearer, it generates a small electrical signal which is transferred to the skin via two pads (a little like those used in maternity ward TENS machines, or the latest relaxation devices).

Designed to combat what Bridle describes as the “violence of ubiquitous surveillance” the electrical signal is intended to feel a little like a tap on the shoulder.

As we say, most of us are probably unaware of just how many times they are captured on CCTV every day – and knowing would do little to alter our habits.  However, Bridle envisages that the device will raise awareness of just how often we come under the “gaze of power”.

Whatever the motives, it’s certainly interesting to see how technology continues to evolve.  As the watchers get smarter, so, apparently, do the watched. We can’t help wondering where it will all end.

We aren’t in the business of counter-intelligence and espionage, so if staying unseen in the shadows is your thing we can only wish you good luck.  However, if you need to keep a close eye on those around you – in your shop, your offices, on your land or near your home, we can certainly help.
