iRobot vs. Robocop

The Fun Bit!

If  you are something of a James Bond enthusiast, you may have previously pondered whether boffins, like Q, really do exist. The information we are about to give you is confidential, but hundreds of Q’s are employed by an agency known as DARPA, each with a licence to design the most innovative and out there inventions.

DARPA stands for The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. To date, they have been responsible for some pretty major inventions, including the internet, not very 007 we admit. Yet perhaps a spying robot hummingbird, weighing less than an ounce and just six inches tall might be a little more fitting.

As protectors of the universe, DARPA are always working on the next big project and CYBER GRAND CHALLENGE is currently well under way. Admittedly, Cyber Grand Challenge does sound like the latest teenage computer game, but the project is concerned with serious matters, designed to give us better cyber protection.

The Boring Bit

Cyber Grand Challenge is software smart enough to spot and seal vulnerabilities in other programs before malicious hackers even know they exist. Put simply, this means the goodies are out smarting the baddies for once. Currently, program vulnerabilities are fixed by people and this has proven to be slow and unreliable, hence why DARPA are looking to hand over to robots.

More Fun Bits

In true boffin/geek style, the Cyber Grand Challenge is holding a convention, Def Con. The convention will invite seven teams to compete and will see whose software is the best hacker. The safe money is on Sheldon Cooper and his team…!

The Last Bit

As civilians, is cyber crime a threat that we need to concern ourselves with?

Sadly you do, particularly if you are using social media. We have all spent time aimlessly perusing the accounts of our friends social media, littered with photographs of their kids, their dogs and of course what they are having for dinner. But what if these friends, are actually the accounts of cyber criminals?

Cybercrime works over social networks in three major ways.

  1. Opportunists searching for the careless sharing of personal data.
  2. Being lured to click an advert or visit a page where malware is then pushed onto your computer.
  3. Using social media to connect, exchange ideas and share stolen information.

The good news is that the personnel at DARPA are working on new ideas to offer better cyber security. The baddies have had the upper hand for far too long and the goodies are about to over throw them. Let’s hope the contenders at Cyber Grand Challenge bring their A Game.
