How safe would you feel in Rio?

Much has been written about safety during the upcoming Olympics in Rio, which takes place between 5th and 21st August. Many initiatives aimed at making the city safer have been put into place since the 2014 Football World Cup and forthcoming Olympic Games. Yet is the city really safe?

Safety in any city should always be a concern for tourists. At the lowest level, pickpockets are usually great opportunists who prey on those who might be distracted by a map or doing a little sightseeing. However the threat in Rio can be a little more sinister. Whilst tourists in Europe might seek safety in a locked car, things in Rio tend to be more aggressive and a locked car will not deter a criminal from getting what they want.

That said, there are simple precautions which can prevent you from becoming an easy target if you are planning to travel to Rio this year, here our are top tips.

Plan ahead. Carrying large amounts of cash is not always a good idea. However ensuring you have enough money to last you through the evening is essential, never draw money out from an ATM after 10pm.

iPhones are lucrative pickings for thieves, worth up to $1000 in Brazil. Have a rummage around the kitchen drawers for an old handset which will draw less attention. If you must take your iPhone, never walk down the street whilst using it.

Away from the sporting events, it is likely you will want to spend some time at the beach. The beaches are always busy and it is possibly the one place where the rich and the poor actually do come together. Take only the bare minimum to the beach, not gadgets, no phones or expensive glasses. Don’t make yourself an easy target.

If you should find yourself in trouble in Rio, then your best point of contact is the Policia de Turismo, they are used to dealing with stolen credit cards and belongings and they often speak English which is a big plus. If you find your passport has been lost or stolen then you will need to contact Her Majesty’s Passport Office who will advise you on the necessary steps.

Whether you are home or abroad, safety should always be of paramount importance so don’t forget to contact Blackburn Alarms and see how we can increase your own personal security.
