Could the X-Box be the latest step in crimefighting?

Okay – so we’d never recommend trying to turn your X-Box into your one and only home security system! But that doesn’t mean it can’t work, even if it’s just by lucky coincidence.

That’s what happened when three men from Eastbourne found themselves the victim of a burglary back in April this year, as we recently discovered in an article at www.eurogamer.net.

Burglars Jay Georgiou and his unidentified partner in crime burst into the mens’ home, armed, and demanded drugs and money.

Georgiou kept so cool he even took a call from his probation officer during the robbery.

What he didn’t know, though, was that before he stormed the house, the three residents had been playing popular wargame Call of Duty online with a friend from nearby town Brighton.

The game features ‘voice chat’ that allows gamers to communicate and coordinate tactics …  but in this instance it transmitted Georgiou’s burglary to the victims’ team-mate, who promptly alerted the police.

Georgiou was arrested less than two hours later. although his accomplice is still at large, Georgiou was sentenced to eight years in prison and ordered to pay £120 costs.

It’s a nice ending to what’s an otherwise unpleasant story. However, if you have a home or business, possessions or family to protect, we would strongly recommend a more proactive approach!
