Big Brother…We are watching you!

Are you suffering with reality TV fatigue yet? Voyeuristic types have been kept busy this year with the gap between civilian Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother virtually non existent. Those who are less enthusiastic bemoan the never ending cycle of B Lists celebs, strewn over whacky sofas and discussing who said what to whom…Yawn!

This year the line up of celebrities includes Lewis Bloor, Marnie Simpson and Christopher Biggins. In true Big Brother style, the celebs are already starting to argue. It is understandable when they are locked up for 24 hours, sleep deprived and possibly hungry. It raises the question, why do it? Of course the answer to the question is easy, money and exposure. There is no other reason anyone would put themselves through the ordeal. But did you know that you could be  unwittingly starring in your very own Big Brother episodes, without getting paid?

Britain is increasingly becoming a surveillance state, with statistics suggesting that there is 1 camera for every 11 people. In increasingly uncertain times, it is understandable that security needs to be increased, but is the scale of CCTV infringing on our freedom and right to privacy? For example, some security systems now have inbuilt speakers. This means that not only are we being watched, but Big Brother can loudly berate us for something deemed not acceptable or anti social.

Walls have ears!

And it is not just Big Brother who is watching your every move, even the walls have ears. Increasingly, people are moaning about their neighbours CCTV, perhaps because it points towards their windows or into their garden. CCTV for private use has increased with the rise of affordable equipment and therefore complaints about intrusion are on the rise. Furthermore, drones are another issue as they come with inbuilt cameras which could be used for snooping around next’s doors house….

In contrast a survey suggested that the British accepted the need for extensive CCTV more than their European counterparts. In the report British people confirmed that they had confidence in the role of CCTV and it capabilities of making the country a safer place.

Of course the cameras in the Celebrity Big Brother House seem to be no deterrent for people behaving badly. Indeed, seemingly it is what the cameras want to see. The more outrageous the behaviour, the more air time the celeb is likely to get.
