Back To School Is Finally Here!

Congratulations, you have finally made it through the summer holidays and the kids are now back at school! Cue big sigh of relief! Or perhaps not, particularly if your little one has now transferred to a high school and the dreaded thought of them going to school and back on their own, is now a reality. Whatever age your child might be, their safety is always of paramount importance so we have put together a quick guide which might give you a little peace of mind.

In The Classroom

For your child to enjoy a positive learning experience, they need to feel comfortable in their surroundings. Here is how you can help your child.

  1. Asking your child about their day is a task that most parents will know is easier said than done. Their unwillingness to inform you of what they have been doing is not necessarily a sign of problems. Look for non-verbal communication such as a drop in grades or torn clothing.
  2. Teach your child how to deal with confrontation. Explain that fighting could lead to someone getting hurt and that it is better to talk it out or walk away.
  3. Many schools are now keen to inform parents about cyber safety. Always talk to your child about what they are doing online and monitor their usage closely.

Travelling

  1. If your child is walking to school, then plan a route with them. The route should ideally be the safest option, bearing in mind that they will want to avoid overly busy roads whilst staying away from lonely park areas. Consider who your child could walk to school with.
  2. If your child is not attending high school you may presume they are aware of stranger danger. However reiterating the message may just remind them to be that extra bit cautious.
  3. Remember that a child may lose their mobile phone, so always ensure they have important numbers and addresses on a separate card.
  4. Tell your child never to cross or walk behind the bus.
  5. Remember that the school bus can be a place where bullying thrives, so ask your child about who they sit next to and who they talk to.
